IPSF - Israeli Primate Sanctuary Foundation

Location

Ben Shemen Forest, Kfar Daniel, Israel

Description

IPSF was founded in order to help primates in Israel. The sanctuary was built in 1996 on land donated by the Monkey Park in Ben-Shemen. The sanctuary is recognized by the Animal Protection Law in Israel and collaborates with Israel’s Nature and National Parks Protection Authority, Veterinary Services and The Ministry of Environment. Over 230 primates have entered the sanctuary and have been rehabilitated through the IPSF and more primates are continually admitted
During the last years we have implemented birth and population control in most petting zoos across the country. As a result, the number of monkeys sold into the black market has drastically decreased. Thus, in the last few years, most monkeys entering the sanctuary are ex-laboratory monkeys.

Mission&Goals
  1. provide an immediate shelter for primates from laboratories, primates confiscated by the authorities, primates given over by private owners and from petting zoos, and any primate in need
  2. provide physiological and psychological rehabilitation by a professionally trained staff
  3. Help the primates regain their social skills so that they can rejoin primates of their own species
  4. find permanent placements for rehabilitated primates as individuals or as newly created groups, in professional and accredited zoos, parks, sanctuaries and re-introduction programs
  5. awaken public awareness to the illegal primate trade market and to the problems it creates
  6. increase public awareness to the necessity of birth control in farms, zoos and petting zoos in order to prevent over population and surplus primates entering the black pet trade
  7. provide a source of professional knowledge in order to enrich the lives of primates held in captivity in Israel
Projects

IPSF accepts monkeys confiscated by Israel's Nature and National Parks Protection Authority as result of illegal tading or keeping, as well as monkeys arriving from research labs. A professional team physically and emotionally rehabilitates the monkeys arriving at IPSF. The team then locates, in Israel and around the world, proper permanent arrangements best fit for each. Along side with its rehabilitation activities, IPSF runs country-wide educational activities such as lectures and presentations on the subject of wildlife rehabilitation and conservation.
