Waimak is a sub adult male who lived with his group in a very small patch of forest surrounded by agricultural plantations which took more and more of his land. It became harder for the group to find food and they invaded the agricultural land to get some bananas. The owners of the land shot Waimak with slingshot as he was crossing the fields. When the man tried to catch him Waimak bit him. During the fight the man hit Waimak on the head with a stick and the monkey became paralyzed in the right side of his body.
He was taken to a room in the house where he was tied to a small stake in the ground. We were told about it by a neighbor and found him a few hours later. He was lying on the ground screaming of anger and fear. We explained to the owner that it is dangerous, illegal and cruel to have the monkey there and after a few hours of negotiation he gave the monkey to us to take to IKAMA Peru. In the first few days Waimak was unable to raise himself from the ground, his tail, right arm and right leg were completely paralyzed he was very frustrated and depressed and we were very worried about him.
