Yacha was confiscated from traveling circus in Peru. She was found by NPC which together with IKAMA Peru, the local police and the wildlife authorities of Peru (INRENA) confiscated her and tool her to IKAMA. In the circus she was tied to a pole in the ground, she was very skinny and had many behavioral problems like biting her own foot and rocking back and forth. We believe that she had been in the circus for years tied up and performing every night; carrying a bucket full with water obliged her to walk on her hind legs. She must have been traveling through all Peru including the coldest places in the Andes. In Tarangue, the rescue center of IKAM Peru, she has put on at least 3 kilos on she is now free in the trees and has learnt to choose leaves and insects. At the beginning she just tried anything and spat it out if she did not like it. She has a strong friendship with a baby spider monkey, Ishamkat, and she is very maternal with her. Hopefully one of the males in the Tarangue will mate with her next year, so she will be able to have a true monkey life.
